U.S. President-elect Barack Obama has nominated New Mexico governor Bill Richardson to become the next Secretary of Commerce.

Obama described Richardson as a leading "economic diplomat for America" who has the experience to what makes the US economy work.

Richardson has served two tours of duty in the cabinet, as well as in state government and the Congress. Sixty one year-old Richardson has served as United Nations ambassador as well as in the post of energy secretary during the Clinton administration.

He is currently in his second term as New Mexico's governor. Richardson, who is Hispanic, launched his bid for the White House early this year, but bowed out after the second Democratic presidential primary in New Hampshire.

He then support Obama for president, campaigning for his bid to become the first African-American president in the country.
