This is the first time for the conflicting sides to meet face-to-face to defuse tensions. Diplomats have welcomed the meeting in Nairobi, although the leaders of both sides are not in Kenya.

Mediators say they are confident of a breakthrough before the Christmas holidays in December.

The discussions are aimed at ending fighting between the government troops and Nkunda's Tutsi rebels in the DRC's North Kivu province. The fighting has displaced a quarter of a million people since August.
