Background of direct flights and shipping across straits

In 2002, charter flights were only between Shanghai on the mainland, and Taipei and Kaohsiung in Taiwan. As negotiations continued between the two sides, charter flights expanded to Beijing and Guangzhou in 2005, and then to Xiamen in 2006. This year, flights expanded to 21 mainland cities and 8 cities in Taiwan.

In the area of shipping, vessels have traveled between the mainland ports of Fujian and the Taiwan-administered Jinmen and Mazu ports since 2001. But now a total of 63 mainland ports and 11 Taiwan ports will open for direct shipping routes.
