Obama nominates new energy head

With less than one month to go before taking the oath of office. US president-elect Barack Obama is continuing to nominate candidates for his new administration line-up.

On Monday, he unveiled his choices for environment-related positions.

During Monday's press conference, Obama nominated Steven Chu to head the Energy Department. Chu, who is Chinese-American won the 1997 Nobel Prize in physics.

Chu also was an early advocate for finding scientific solutions to climate change.

Steven Chu, Secretary of Energy - Nominee, said, "President-elect Obama has set the tone and pace for moving our country forward with optimism and calm determination. I hope to emulate his example. With these virtues the United States and the world can and will prevail over our economic, energy and climate change challenges."

During the same press conference, Obama also put forward his choices to head the Environmental Protection Agency as well as the White House Council on Environment Quality.
