Sichuan civil affairs authorities are stepping up efforts to distribute winter materials to those affected by May's earthquake. A cold snap has hit the province over the past couple of days.

Before the cold snap set in, Sichuan had received donations of 12,000 quilts and 17,000 items of clothing.

Temperatures in much of Sichuan have dipped sharply.

The biggest drop reached 12 degrees Celsius.

Light snow is falling in some areas, including the quake zone.

Some power lines are also frozen.

Feng Hanzhong, deputy head of Sichuan Meteorological Station, said, "The cold snap is expected to bring our highest temperatures to merely between six and eight degrees Celsius. "

But pupils in the quake zone are feeling a bit warmth.

Before the cold snap set in, Sichuan had received donations of 12,000 quilts and 17,000 items of clothing. All have been given to people in the quake zone.

And Sichuan itself is also well prepared.

Authorities have allocated more than 215-million yuan, or over 31-million US dollars, for winter materials.

They include over 717,000 quilts, 212,000 sets of padded clothing, and huge stocks of other items for keeping warm.

The re-building of permanent houses for farmers continues at an intense pace. Over 500,000 have been completed.
