Chinese permanent representative to the UN, Zhang Yesui, says piracy has become a serious threat to international shipping, trade and security in Somali waters and the Gulf of Aden. He says that as a permanent member of the Security Council, China is willing to take its responsibility to safeguard world peace and safety under relevant Security Council resolutions. He says the warships' main duty is to protect Chinese vessels as well as ships carrying humanitarian relief material by international organizations.

Chinese ambassador to the UN zhang Yesui said, "I reported the Chinese government's decision - to send warships to the Gulf of Aden and Somalia waters on an escorting mission- to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and to Ambassador Neven Jurica, the Croatian permanent representative to the UN, who is also the current president of UN Security Council for December. Both of them welcome and support the decision of the Chinese government, saying that it is the best way to support the efforts of the UN Security Council."
