Leaders of European countries warmly endorsed Barack Obama as the new President of the United States of America. They expressed hope that Obama can usher in a new era of international cooperation, and seek global consensus on how to tackle the problems facing the world.
Angela Merkel, German Chancellor, said, "I think today is a very special day, not only for the United States of America, but also for billions of people all over the world. The fact that an African-American president is being inaugurated and the fact that we are looking at intensive trans-Atlantic cooperation is something that moves not only our thoughts but also our hearts."
Gordon Brown, British prime minister, said, "I believe together America, Britain and the rest of the world can confront the economic problems that he is determined to face up to and meet the environmental challenge which is a mission he has set himself and we can bring more hope and more prosperity to the world in the years to come."
