UN tells Israel to open Gaza crossings

The UN's humanitarian chief wants Israeli crossings into Gaza to be fully opened. Speaking in Cairo, John Holmes said the border points should be fully opened not just for relief supplies but also for commercial goods, so, Gaza's economic life can get back to normal.

John Holmes , UN Humanitarian Chief, said, "There is a huge amount to be done, we will be launching a flash appeal for those immediate needs, for those essential repairs on February 2 in Geneva on behalf of UN agencies and NGOs working in this humanitarian and early recovery field, and I can't say exactly what it would be for or what the amount would be, but it will be a very significant amount of several hundred million (US) dollars, probably more than 500 million (US) dollars at least, to tackle the immediate needs."
