Frank-Walter Steinmeier, German Foreign Minister, said, "After the news that has been communicated yesterday of the satellite launch in Iran, we also have to understand that we are facing in that country technical capabilities that really urgently require an intensified dialogue between us in the months and weeks to come. On the topic of Iran, it is very important that we work together."

Hillary Clinton, US Secretary of State, said, "We are obviously concerned about Iranian behavior on a very broad base. It's not limited to any one event or activity. And as you know, we're undergoing a comprehensive review of how best to approach Iran and how to influence its behavior going forward."

Iranian media reported that the satellite was launched into space late on Monday. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called it a breakthrough in Iran's science and technology, and said it will promote Iran's position among other countries.

The Obama administration has been considering new approaches to Iran, including open dialogue and the appointment of a special envoy to deal with Iran.

Obama says the United States would be willing to reach out a hand to Iran, a dramatic reversal in foreign policy from the Bush administration.
