Iran's former president Mohammad Khatami says he'll challenge incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the country's upcoming presidential elections.

Khatami announced his candidacy on Sunday during a meeting with supporters in Tehran. 65-year-old Khatami was Iran's president from 1997 to 2005.

He is credited with relaxing some of Iran's rigid restrictions on cultural and social activities. But his program to implement democratic reforms failed as powerful hardliners prevented him from carrying out his agenda.

Iran's presidential elections are set for June 12th, when Ahmadinejad will seek his second four-year term. Moderate Iranian cleric Mehdi Karrubi has also announced his intention to run.
