The Democratic People's Republic of Korea army is ready for "an all-out confrontation" with South Korea, the official KCNA news cited a military spokesman as saying on Thursday.

North Korea's army said on Saturday it would assume an 'all-out confrontational posture' against the South and wipe out the conservative government in Seoul for refusing to cooperate with them.(KCNA/Reuters)

The spokesman said the Lee Myung-bak administration of South Korea was escalating the confrontation with the DPRK, in a bid to find a way to ease its serious internal crisis.

The spokesman for the Korean People's Army said this would meet merciless and stern punishment from the army and people of the DPRK.

Tension has increased since Lee Myung-bak became president of South Korea a year ago. He vowed to take a tougher stance on the DPRK, a position that effectively reversed 10 years of his liberal predecessors' efforts to engage the DPRK.

Pyongyang scrapped all political and military agreements with Seoul, declaring to enter an "all-out confrontational posture" in January.
