FM urges Russia to continue rescue missing Chinese sailors

The Foreign Ministry in Beijing has asked Russia to continue rescue efforts for a group of missing Chinese sailors. It also wants an investigation after a Chinese cargo vessel sank Sunday near a Russian sea port.

According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, 3 Chinese crew members were rescued by a nearby Russian border guard vessel. But 7 are still missing.

The accident happened in stormy weather off the Russian far-eastern port Vladivostok.

This video footage from Russian television recorded the cargo ship New Star before it sank.

The Foreign Ministry has asked Russia to continue its rescue efforts and start an investigation into the accident.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said, "The Foreign Ministry and the Chinese consulate in Russia have already each raised representations to the Russian Embassy to China and other related departments. We are urging the Russian side to spare no effort to help search for the missing crew members and quickly find out the cause of the incident."

The injured crew members are receiving treatment in hospital. And the Chinese embassy in Russia as well as the consulate in Khabarovsk have both sent officials to visit the crew and handle the aftermath of the accident.
