The meeting was held at a Jerusalem hotel on Sunday. Hawkish Likud Party leader Netanyahu has vowed to persuade Livni, the foreign minister and leader of the centrist Kadima party, to be part of a joint government.

Netanyahu pledged earlier to cooperate with the US on Middle East peace. He has said he will pursue that goal by enlisting Livni's Kadima which favors trading large parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank for peace into a national unity government.

Livni said she has agreed to hold further talks for a possible joint government with Netanyahu, but that "substantial differences" remain.
