China's Ministry of Transport has warned the merchant ships passing through the Gulf of Aden to remain alert to pirates operating in the area. |
The Chinese navy has carried out 22 escort missions since the country began its deep-sea task against rampant piracy in the Gulf of Aden. More than 20 warships from around the world are escorting ships passing through the area, but three vessels were still attacked by pirates in January.
China initiated its escort task force at the end of December after the United Nations Security Council called on countries to patrol the gulf and waters off Somalia.
