US Mideast envoy meets Palestinian president, PM

US Middle East envoy George Mitchell has held meetings in the West Bank with Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, and Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

On Friday, Mitchell first held talks with Fayyad in Ramallah, before visiting Abbas' presidential headquarters. One of Mitchell's immediate goals in the region is to strengthen a shaky, informal cease-fire that ended Israel's war on the Gaza Strip last month. A power-sharing deal between Gaza's Hamas rulers and Abbas' moderate West Bank government is seen as a key to reconstruction efforts.
