Russia criticizes OSCE over Georgia conflict

The Russian ambassador to the United Nations has criticized the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe on the issue of Georgia invasion of South Ossetia. Vitaly Churkin said on Friday the OSCE had failed to inform its members about Georgia's preparations for armed aggression against South Ossetia.

Addressing a UN Security Council meeting, Churkin said the 56-member Organization had information about the impending attack but had failed to share its observations. He said the information may have prevented Georgia's attack on the breakaway region of South Ossetia last August. On February the 12th, the OSCE extended the mandate of 20 unarmed military monitors sent to Georgian areas near South Ossetia.

The Greek Foreign Minister, whose country now holds the OSCE chairmanship, told the UN Security council that talks are continuing to have a more comprehensive OSCE presence in Georgia.
