MOSUL, Iraq, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed and six others injured in separate bomb attacks, including a suicide one, in northern Iraq city of Mosul on Monday, a local police source said.

A man and his son were killed when a roadside bomb struck their car in the Wadi Hajar neighborhood in southern Mosul, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

In a separate incident, a suicide bomber wearing an explosive vest blew himself up at a police checkpoint at the Bab al-Baidh neighborhood in southwestern Mosul, wounding four policemen and two civilians, the source said.

Also in the city, a gunman hurled a grenade on a passing U.S. patrol in the Farouk Street, damaging a Humvee, the source said, adding it was not clear whether the patrol sustained any casualty as the U.S. troops immediately sealed off the area.

Nineveh province, with its capital city of Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad, is said to be one of the last strongholds of al-Qaida fighters in the war-torn country.

Despite security gains in recent months in Iraq, there are still sporadic bombings targeting Iraqi security forces and civilians, which shape setback to the Iraqi government.
