US, Australia discuss terrorism in Afghanistan

Australia's Prime Minister says his country is committed to stop Afghanistan from turning into a haven for terrorists. Kevin Rudd was speaking in Washington after meeting US President Barack Obama and Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.

Australia is a crucial US ally in the war in Afghanistan, and is the largest contributor of forces outside NATO. Kevin Rudd has called Washington a key strategic partner, and the cornerstone of Australia's security policy. But Australia's reluctance to extend its mandate in Afghanistan could jeopardize ties.

The US has announced that it will send an additional 17,000 soldiers to reinforce NATO-led troops in Afghanistan.
