Tibet is gearing up to celebrate its first-ever "Serfs Emancipation Day" which will take place on Saturday. Locals in the southwestern Chinese region are welcoming the arrival of the day in various ways.

Tibet is gearing up to celebrate its first-ever "Serfs Emancipation Day" which will take place on Saturday.

Tibet's capital city Lhasa is dressed up for the celebration.

On March 28th fifty years ago, democratic reform began in the region.

That event ended the centuries-old system of feudal serfdom.

Some one million serfs were therefore given freedom.

The date was set as "Serfs Emancipation Day" at the annual session of the regional People's Congress earlier this year.

Lhasa residents are expressing their excitement in song.
