Vice FM: China will play role in Afghanistan

Vice Foreign Minister, Song Tao, says China will continue working with the international society to promote peace, stability and economic rebuilding in Afghanistan.

Song made the remarks in Moscow during a Shanghai Cooperation Organization conference on Afghanistan. He called on all parties concerned to support the UN's leading role in reconstructing Afghanistan, provide assistance for upcoming elections in the country and improve mechanisms for regional cooperation. The vice foreign minister said China has written off a loan of 75 million US dollars provided to Afghanistan.

The conference opened on Friday, and brings together senior officials from the UN, the EU, NATO and other international organizations. Delegates are discussing plans to combat militants, drug-trafficking and organized crime in Afghanistan.
