The Democratic People's Republic of Korea is confirming that it has sent a communications satellite into orbit. It is also declaring Sunday's rocket launch a success. Meanwhile, South Korea and the United States say they detected the launch through their monitoring systems. But they also say they haven't observed anything orbiting in space.

Over 24 hours after the launch by the DPRK, what the rocket was actually carrying, still remains a mystery.

Pyongyang is telling the world that it has successfully sent a satellite into space.

DPRK's state media said the country's top leader Kim Jong Il observed the entire launching process on Sunday.
