The ship was carrying a cargo of concrete and stones. It sounded three alarms early on Saturday morning, about 150 kilometers north of her destination Port of Victoria.
The ship then did a 380 degree turn back to Somalia. Officials say both satellite images and aerial shots of the the ship showed that it was being followed by a suspected pirate boat.
The Belgian government is assessing what action it can take to safeguard the crew members of the ship.
