China urges resumption of Israeli-Palestinian talks

Visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi has urged the resumption of Israeli-Palestinian talks to advance the Middle East peace process. On Thursday, he met Israeli top leaders in Jerusalem.

During his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Yang Jiechi said China is ready to provide assistance to help push forward the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. He pointed out that China hopes to play a constructive role in the resolution of the Middle East issue.
Netanyahu said the Israeli government attaches great importance to its relations with China. He also said Israel is ready to expand cooperation to achieve common development.
Yang said China and Israel should work together to promote cooperation during the global financial crisis. Earlier on Thursday, Yang met with Israeli President Shimon Peres. The two sides agreed to continue cooperation in various sectors to boost bilateral ties and exchanged views on the Middle East issue.
Yang Jiechi also met with Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and Israeli opposition leader Tizpi Livni. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said that China's position is essential to solving problems in the region. Yang Jiechi also laid a wreath at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial museum in Jerusalem.
