A five-day shutdown is now underway in Mexico. Public activities have been suspended to determine whether to extend or ease emergency measures against the spread of the flu virus.

In the capital, many are staying at home to prevent exposure to any possible infection. And others are leaving for safer areas during the shutdown.

This is Mexico City -- a city with a population of 20 million, on May Day the first day of the shutdown.

All but essential services are closed.

Unlike the quiet streets, Mexico City's airport is busy.

Many foreign students are going home.

This Peruvian has studied in Mexico for three years.

He says he's going not only because the closing of his/her school but also because he's worried about catching the flu.
