While Chinese celebrate their annual Spring Festival with various cultural activities, foreigners living in China are not left behind. On Feburary 8, thousands of foreigners in Beijing were invited to watch the famous modern Chinese drama "Teahouse" at the Beijing People's Art Theater, and many find the play is their cup of tea, too.

Among the foreign audiences there are diplomats from over 40 nations, foreign journalists and leaders of foreign businesses in Beijing. To show their respect for the event, many of them wore "Tangzhuang", a traditional Chinese outfit, to the theatre. Managing to comprehend the Beijing dialect, the foreign guests were taken on a journey back to old China through the intriguing and realistic plots, not to mention the expressive performances of the actors.

"I think the acting is very good. I can understand what is happening even though I can't understand all the words, and it is about an interesting time in history," said an American visitor.

Written by famous Chinese playwright Lao She, Teahouse portrays the rise and decline of a typical Beijing teahouse and the plight and success of an array of characters. As one of China's most influential modern plays, Teahouse is also known and read by many foreigners. But as one British audience member said, it was nice to see it brought to life on the stage.
