R: Hi! Welcome to 'Let's Talk' . We're back today with my husband Bill he is a businessman and sports fun. And we''re talking some more about sports words and idioms that we use in everyday life and which we use in business too. I hope the last ones were successful for you and useful in your business and your everyday life.
You know every game has a certain time element in it. And so you should be aware sometimes you maybe talking to some American and they''ll say "Time out." And they made the letter ''T'' with their hands. What do they mean?
B: They mean it''s time to take a break. We need to take a pause , that''s right, just like in the middle of the game.
R: And you could use that in a meeting obviously. And you could also say "It''s halftime." ''Halftime'' would mean ''Oh, we can all relax. And maybe go and get something to eat. We''re just in the middle of a project. And it''s a time to take a pause.
B: Well it can mean in a bigger sense when you have a project going for a long period of time that you get to a certain mile stone and some people might say "Oh, you know I guess it''s over." And another would say "No it just half time. We''re gonna go back to the lockers take a break and come bake on the field to play again."
R: Oh, so don''t be discouraged.
B: The game is not over.
R: Oh, that''s good. There''s also ''On the clock.'' ''On the clock'' means the clock that''s timing whatever game you''re playing is going is taking. So if you say "Oh, I have not time. I''m on the clock. " means I''m still in the middle of my work and there''s a deadline and I can''t stop, I have to keep on.
B: It''s a good one that is often used when the foreign businessman come to town. And they booked their return flight and the everybody at the negotiating table knows that that the foreign side is on the clock, meaning they feel time pressure to finish by particular time.
R: That''s good. You know there''s a golf expression you hear, which is ''par for the course.'' ''Par for the course'' have you heard that? You know the golf course each hole has a par.
B: The number of strokes suspected for a good golfer to be able to get from the ''T'' to the hole. So when you say ''par for the course'' you mean those are just the challenges and difficulties or results that one would expect in such a situation.
R: So no big surprise but what is expected in this situation.
B: When someone comes back and says "Oh, it''s so tough!" Another person with more experience might say "Oh, that just par for the course."
R: What about a person who''s on the ball?
B: Well a guy who is on the ball, or really has a lot on the ball is someone who is really in charge really competent, very skill at what they''re doing. Someone who''s a winner.
R: Right. but that''s not the same thing as ''keep your eye on the ball'', right? Well that''s an expression you hear certainly in almost every sports, right? You need to be watching the ball carefully. So keep your eye on the ball. In business that may mean don''t get distracted.
B: That''s right, concentrate on what''s most important. I often tell my staff keep your eye on the ball and that way you won''t miss it.
R: Well now what about ''straight from the horse''s mouth.'' You were saying you would use that before that expression.
B: This is a commonly heard expression.
R: Horses don''t talk so what does that mean? Horse''s mouth.
B: Oh that''s also from racing and it indicates that you''ve heard the true situation from someone right in the middle of it. Someone who really knows. So while there''re rumors circulating around the only way you can know for sure is to get it straight from the horse''s mouth.
R: Ah so the horses who are actually in the race.
B: Can tell you what''s happens, that''s right.
R: And what about grand slam. It''s a grand slam. That''s a good expression in many sports, right?
B: It generally means that there was a lot at risk and you won big.
R: Oh, big winning.
B: In baseball if all of the bases have runners on them and you come up to bat and you hit a home run out of the park. There''s another expression ''hitting one out of the park.''
R: Too far that you even catch it.
B: That means you won in a very big way. By a wide margin. If you hit one out of the park and you have runners on all the base you''ve got a grand slam because it''s not only one home run, it''s four.
R: And grand slam is also useful I know in the card games and other sports so it means you''re winning big, right?
B: That''s right. You had a lot of risk and you won big.
R: What about your point man? Who is your point man? We all want to have point and score in every game. But how would you use that in business if you say "He is my point man."
B: Well it would be a typical situation where an American might say "Now if you want to follow up please keep in touch with our point man." Or they may say "This guy here is our point man on the deal." That means the person to whom you should come for getting details or managing. Sort of like a project manager or the main coordinator. We would refers to that as point man in that situation.
R: And he would score hopefully.
B: Hopefully he would take the ball without dropping it. And he''ll score, that''s right.
R: Well I think at the end we should explain them an expression called "Give it your best shot." Because I think that''s a great inspiration. You should try hard and do your best.
B: No matter what you do give it your best shot and every one would want you on their team.
R: So we hope our sports idioms and expressions are useful to you. You practice your English give it your best shots.

Time out（暂停）
还会做出这样的手势

他们的意思是中断一会儿
需要暂停一下
就像比赛中的暂停一样
你可以在开会的时候这样说
也可以说It''s halftime.（半场休息）
意思是需要休息一下
可能出去吃点东西
总之 计划进行到了一半
需要暂停一下了
从更广的意思上说
比如要完成一项长期的计划
你会遇到一些特定的阶段
有些人也许会说
我想该结束了
但另一些人会说
It just half time.（这只是半场休息。）
我们得回更衣室休息
然后回来继续比赛
也就是不要气馁
比赛还没有结束
还有一个短语
on the clock（比赛正在进行）
也就是说比赛的计时钟还在走着
比如你说 我没有时间了
I''m on the clock.
意思是你正处于工作时限中
不能停顿 要继续工作
当外国商人来谈判时经常会这样用
他们已经订好了返乘机票
谈判桌边的人都知道
他们的时间有限
都感到时间的压力
必须在特定时间内完成谈判
你可能还听说过一个高尔夫术语
par for the course
par 是指 标准杆数
也就是一名优秀选手
将球从开球区打进球洞所需要的杆数
par for the course
就是说在一定情况下
所遇到的挑战和困难是预料之中的
没有什么让人吃惊的
比如有人可能说
It''s so tough.（太困难了。）
而更有经验的人可能会说
这是预料之中的 (par for the course)
有人说person who''s on the ball
是什么意思呢
这是说某人正在控制球
或经常控制球
意思是说他有控制局面的能力
对他所干的事非常精通 总能获胜
它和keep your eye on the ball
意思不一样
在很多运动中

在商业中就是说不能分心

我经常对我的下属这样说

还有一种常用的说法
straight from the horse''s mouth
马不会说话 从马嘴里会透露出什么呢
这也是从赛马中来的
意思是从知情人那里听到真实的情况
当谣言漫天飞的时候
想知道真实情况必须找到知情人
就像只有从参赛的马匹身上
才能了解比赛的情况
体育比赛中经常听到grand slam
grand slam是指什么呢
通常是指经历很多困难最终获胜
而且是重大胜利
在棒球比赛中
如果每个垒位上都有跑垒员
而这时你打出一计本垒打
或者说hit one out of the park
就是说把球打得很远
别人根本拿不到
它表示大胜对手
如果你hit one out of the park
而每个垒位上都有跑垒员
这就叫做grand slam（大满贯）
一个本垒打得到了四分
在桥牌和其它一些项目中
也用grand slam来形容大胜
对经历了困难最终获胜
在体育比赛中
我们都希望拥有得分手 (point man)
在商业活动中point man指什么呢
在商业活动中 美国人经常会说

point man这里是指负责人
有点像项目经理或协调人
在这是我们称他们point man
