Egyptian FM, Powell Mull Mideast Situation Over Phone
MON, FEB 25, 2002
Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher on Sunday discussed the worsening Mideast situation with U.S.Secretary of State Colin Powell, Egypt's official MENA news agency said.
During the phone talks, Powell, who initiated the contact, expressed the U.S. satisfaction with the outcome of a Palestinian-Israeli security meeting held on Friday.
Powell said that a similar meeting would be held within the coming few days.
On his part, Maher raised the issue of Israel's decision on keeping its military siege on Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, stressing that "such a decision runs counter to a pledge made by Israel, and would further complicate the situation."
Powell said that he has not received the official text of the decision.
