Suspect Terroristic Traces Discovered Near U.S. Embassy in Rome
MON, FEB 25, 2002
Police in Rome have discovered a hole in the wall of an underground passage close to the U.S. Embassy in Rome and thus suspected that terrorists were planning to use it for a chemical attack on the diplomatic mission, Italian newspapers reported Sunday.

The hole was found last Wednesday in a tunnel used for electricity, gas and phone cables and pipes, which links up with another passageway leading to the centrally-positioned embassy.

Investigators stressed the hole was not there in January, when the tunnels and passageways around the embassy on Via Veneto were last checked.

Police also found a ladder and a pair of workmen's overalls not far from the hole.

The fresh search followed the February 19 arrest in Rome of four Moroccans who were caught in possession of a large quantity of a cyanide-based substance, explosive powder and detailed, technical maps of the city on which the embassy was highlighted.

The four, who are suspected of links with Osama bin Laden's terror network, were arrested in the small hours of Tuesday in their apartment on the outskirts of Rome.
