Czechs Reiterate Policy in Support of Middle East Peace
TUE, FEB 26, 2002
Czech Foreign Minister Jan Kavan assured Palestinian Ambassador to Prague Sami Abdal Fattah on Monday that Czech foreign policy on the Middle East conflict has not changed, local radio reported.

Kavan said the Czech Republic supports relevant U.N. resolutions on the establishment of a Palestinian state and works for resuming the Middle East peace process.

He stressed that Prague recognized Yasser Arafat as the legal representative of the Palestinian National Authority.

The statement came when the Israeli daily Haaretz reported that Czech Prime Minister Milos Zeman compared the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to Adolf Hitler last week. The remarks ignited intense protest from the European Union and Arab countries.

Fattah told reporters after today's meeting that he was satisfied with the talks and pleased by the Czech attitude.

Although Zeman denied having made the comparison, saying that he was misquoted due to "his poor English". Despite his reiteration of the consistent position of his country, Egypt and Tunis still postponed Zeman's scheduled visit at the end of the month in protest.

Czech President Vaclav Havel sent a letter to his Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak last Friday, assuring him that his country will adhere to its policy on the Middle East and strive for the renewal of dialogue and the peace process between the two sides involved.
