CIS Countries Sign Documents on Military Cooperation

The CIS Defense Ministers' Council passed several final documents on military and technological cooperation Wednesday, wrapping up its regular meeting in St. Petersburg.

Representatives of military agencies from dozens of countries attended the council's meeting held within the framework of the Shanghai agreement.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov, chairman of the Defense Ministers' Council of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS),told the press that the participants discussed 14 items, such as military and technological cooperation, information work, personnel issues and the creation of a united CIS anti-aircraft system.

Ivanov emphasized that the creation of the CIS Defense Ministers' Council was a logical and historically justified step. A complicated cooperation system has been set up at the regional and bilateral levels.

He urged the CIS states to improve the mechanisms of exercising control over the implementation of the council's decisions, to continue the harmonization of national legislation to form a legal framework and to improve the distribution of means and forces in compliance with adopted obligations.

A scientific conference was held in St. Petersburg alongside with the CIS Defense Ministers' forum to analyze the experience and lessons of military cooperation within the commonwealth.
