The biggest-ever Chinese military exhibition will open on Monday at the China People's Revolution Military Museum to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

The exhibition, entitled "Our Troops toward the Sun", will especially highlight the PLA's development since 1949, Guo Dehe, the museum's curator, said in Beijing yesterday.

The exhibition, which runs through August 20, will span 6,540 sq m and feature 970 photos, 1,750 military items, 43 models and 57 graphics.

Six handmade scenes will illustrate military housing and uniforms, and demonstrate how PLA soldiers have saved people from floods and how robots have been used on the battlefield.

Also on display will be some 20 armored vehicles and weapons, including a 5.8 mm gun, a battle tank, an anti-aircraft gun, missiles and attack bombers.

Visitors will also be able to take part in simulations of what it is like to drive a tank or fire a warship's guns.

Top officials from the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the government will take part in the opening ceremony.

The exhibition will open to the public from Tuesday and entrance is free. Groups can get tickets by registering with the museum's ticket office with their unit's letter of introduction, while individuals can get them using their identity cards.

The exhibition is co-organized by the publicity department of the CPC Central Committee, and the PLA's general staff, political, logistics and armament departments.
