Ge Zhenfeng, deputy chief of general staff of the PLA, met the visiting Commander of the U.S. Pacific Air Force (US PACAF) Paul Hester and his party yesterday in Beijing.

Ge Zhenfeng began by extending warm welcome to Hester's visit to China and by stating that he felt pleased to see the present overall bilateral relations between the two countries and the two armed forces taking on the momentum of sound development. He then further observed that thanks to the care of the heads of state of the two countries, the high-level reciprocal visits of the two armed forces had witnessed constant increase, their mutual trust had been incrementally enhanced and their cooperation had increasingly deepened in recent years. Provided that China and the U.S. could treat each other with all sincerity, approach and handle the complex issues haunting the relations between the two militaries from the strategic height and the long point of view, and deal with their respective concerns properly, the relations between the two armed forces would surely make sound and steady headways.

Ge Zhenfeng also briefed the guests on China's road of peaceful development and the national defense policy defensive in nature as well as China's principled stand on the Taiwan issue.

Hester said the U.S. and China faced some common challenges and for that mater, enjoyed great potentials of cooperation. He wished that the two militaries would enhance mutual trust and understanding, expand exchanges, exchanges between the grass-roots officers in particular, and make concerted efforts to boost the progressive development of relations between the two armed forces.
