A "frogman" unit of the PLA showed up at the Olympic Aquatic Center in Shunyi of Beijing yesterday to make underwater security checks on the water areas of about 610,000 square meters part by part for the Olympic Games as a "warm up" of the full-swing unfolding of underwater security during the Beijing Olympic Games next year.
The "frogman" unit consists of 30-odd outstanding officers and men dispatched by a diving detachment of a Navy unit. As an important force of water rescue of the PLA, the unit has fulfilled demanding tasks of ocean rescue, deep sea salvage, emergency rescue and relief operations and ocean survey for many times. Quite a good number of the servicemen in the unit are seasoned diving masters, among whom there is no lack of holders of national diving record. According to Deputy Commander Zhang Yang, leader of the unit, they acted on the orders of the general headquarters/departments of the PLA and the Navy, and came to Beijing for cooperating with the Special Police Contingent of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau for doing initial rehearsal for the all-round underwater security for the Olympic Games of next year.
