Ghana carried African hopes into the second round of the World Cup when they beat the United States 2-1 to ensure qualification from Group E.

Ghana took the lead through midfielder Haminu Dramani in the 22nd minute but Clint Dempsey equalized for the Americans two minutes before the interval.

The teams hardly had time to get their collective breath back before the U.S. conceded a penalty in the second minute of stoppage time, converted by Stephen Appiah.

The United States finished last in the group and were eliminated.

Ghana are only the fifth African team to advance from the World Cup group stage and the only one of five African nations at this tournament to go through so far -- though Tunisia have an outside chance in Group H on Friday.
