China is calling for more collaboration among Asian countries to control bird flu. Premier Wen Jiabao made a series of proposals on information sharing, monitoring mechanisms, vaccine research and technical training programs. Zhu Yan explains the urgency of coordinated efforts to fight the disease in Asia.
China's proposals on joint efforts to fight bird flu come at a time when the disease seems to be picking up speed in the region. Fresh animal cases have broken out in Japan and Thailand, and seem to be spreading in Vietnam's southern provinces. Human cases have been reported in China, South Korea and Indonesia. Four Indonesians have died from bird flu in the past two weeks and a Jakarta hospital designated to treat bird flu cases has been overwhelmed with patients.
