The Nordic Combined is a compound of two different disciplines: ski jumping and cross-country skiing. There are three heats in the Nordic Combined, two individual and one team event:

The ski jumping trial is held first, followed by the cross-country skiing. Competitions are held in accordance with the official rules of the two disciplines.

Universiade Competitions

There are two individual competitions: the Individual Gundersen, with the NH ski jumping combined with the 15 km cross-country skiing race, and the SPRINT, with a single jump and the 7.5 km cross-country.

Teams are made up of three athletes.

Gundersen method and scores

Each athlete performs two jumps which are evaluated and scored. At the end of the ski jumping trial, the judges assign an overall score that covers the length, technical performance and style shown in both jumps. Since the methods of evaluation used for the two disciplines in the Nordic Combined are completely different (points for the jumping and time for the cross-country skiing race), it was essential to develop a scoring system which took this into consideration.

The starting order for the cross-country skiing race is therefore determined by the results of the ski jump. A fifteen point gap in the score for the jump event is equivalent to a minute’s advantage in the cross-country skiing race. The winner of the ski jump starts first, followed by the other athletes.

The overall winner of the event is the first athlete to cross the finishing line in the cross-country skiing race. Other cross-country skiing events include two skiing styles, classic and freestyle (skating). In the Nordic Combined, however, the jumps from the ramp are followed by freestyle (skating) cross-country skiing only, not classic style.
