On September 1, landscapers began setting up three-dimensional flower beds along a stretch of Chang'an Avenue to greet the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China. |
Meanwhile, flowers are also being arranged at Tiananmen Square, elsewhere on the city’s north-south central axis, the Olympic Common Domain, the vicinity of Flower Expo Park, parks where various events celebrating the National Day holiday will be held, major scenic spots in Beijing and major connective roads. It is estimated that more than 40 million flowers of over 70 types will be arranged in Beijing for the National Day holiday, and most of them are flowers popular with the international community.
Flowers will be arranged along Chang’an Avenue and its extension to highlight the theme of “Universal Celebration,” and the achievements China has made in the last 60 years in politics, economy, culture, the military, and science and technology will be showcased through the various flowers plantings. Flower beds named the “Information Era” that shows the development of network and digital technologies, the “Giant Dragon is Rising” that shows the splendid achievements China made in the past 60 years, and the “Shenzhou Spaceship Blast Off” that represents the high-tech sector will be set up at the four corners of Xidan’s intersection. A flower bed named “Sing Happily in the Countryside” that depicts the refreshing face of the new socialist countryside will be set up in front of the China World Trade Center.
According to Jie Jun, a senior engineer at Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscape and Forestry’s Urban Greening Department, during the National Day holiday a large three-dimensional flower bed will be arranged in the center of Tiananmen Square and 22 three-dimensional flower beds will be arranged in the walkways along Chang’an Avenue. Among these 22 beds, 18 are located between Xinxing Bridge and Guomao Bridge. Over 3.3 million flowers covering over 100,000 square meters will be planted on the sides of the roads, and so far, half of them have been planted.
Among the flowers that will be showcased on Chang’an Avenue, some are brand new types such as Begonia semperflorens (big flowers), mini Garden petunia, German chamomile, and wodyetia, and others are ones that decorated the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games such as Torenia fournieri, Begonia semperflorens, Rudbeckia laciniata, and cleome. These flowers feature brilliant colors and long lifetimes that will last till the end of October. Consequently, the three-dimensional flower beds arranged along Chang’an Avenue will not be dismantled until the end of October, and the flowers planted on the ground can bloom until the end of October.
New watering technology will be adopted in a large scale to water the flower beds along Chang’an Avenue, and thus much water will be saved. On the 22 three-dimensional flower beds, main pipes and branch pipes will be directly connected with flower pots. The flowers will be watered with this new technology.
