Playing the erh-hu, the two sisters are enrolled into the same university

Eighteen years ago, two sisters named Wu Xinrong and Wu Xinhua, were born in Sheyang. Wu Xinrong, who was delivered first by the doctor, became the elder sister. In the college entrance examination this year, the sisters were both enrolled into Nanyang Institute of Technology, specializing in art. The elder sister Wu Xinrong plans to major in measurement and control Technology and Equipment and the younger sister Wu Xinhua plans to major in Electric Engineering and Automation.

There is telepathy between twins. Without thinking, elder sister Wu Xinrong nodded on this point and said: “I think that’s true, and many things have proved it.” In primary school, when compositions were assigned by the teacher, the two would by mere coincidence write around the same subject.

With the scores of the two sisters went back and forth, sometimes, Wu Xinrong did better, but sometimes Wu Xinhua surpassed the elder sister. In the college entrance examinations, the younger sister surpassed the elder by 5 points. Generally speaking, their scores are quite similar. However, Xinhua feels that their characters are quite different, “I am introverted and she is extroverted.”

Xinrong and Xinhua’s grandfather is good at playing the erh-hu. Influenced by their grandfather, the two girls started practicing the instrument while they were in primary school. In junior middle school, they had to stop practicing it because they were too busy. Not until the second year of senior middle school, did they pick it up again and at that time they decided to be candidates for the artistic school. Different from common examinees, in addition to guaranteeing their academic performance and reviewing previous studies, the sisters had to practice the erh-hu during their noon break. They even had to continue practicing it over and over again at home after taking the independent-study session at night. On weekends, they went to a teacher’s home to receive private tutoring. “Though that period was very busy, we lived contentedly. Besides, playing the erh-hu after studying hard was a way to relax. When we were practicing, if we did well we felt very happy,” said Xinrong. During the interview held by the artistic school, the two sisters played the same piece of music. The younger sister was “excellent” and the elder sister was “qualified.” Both passed successfully and were admitted into Nanjing University of Science and Technology.

As the two girls were growing up, they began to expect some changes. Xinrong and Xinhua intentionally chose different majors, because if their lives are too similar it would lack any real “meaning.” Even their mother remarked that, “If it goes on like this, they may have to live together for their whole lives.”
