There are more than 1,000 branch rivers and thousands of lakes within Inner Mongolia, and a total volume of surface water of 64.7 billion m3.
Out-flowing rivers include the Yellow River, Yongding River, Luanhe River, Eerguna River, Nenjiang River and Xiliao River. The drainage area of these six river systems is 534,000 km2, accounting for 46.2% of total drainage area of Inner Mongolia. Interior rivers include Wulagai River, Changdu River, Tabu River, Aibugai River and Ejina River, with a total drainage area of 174,000 km2, accounting for 15% of the total drainage area of the autonomous region.
There are thousands of lakes in Inner Mongolia with the total area of more than 7,000 km2. These are located in Liaohe Plain, the Inner Mongolia Plateau and Ordos Plateau. They can be divided into saltwater, brackish water and freshwater lakes. Inner Mongolia has a water surface of 900,000 hectares, of which, 56 hectares have excellent water quality, moderate salinity and are suitable for breeding. Therefore, Inner Mongolia is similar to Hubei Province, which is regarded as "a land of one thousand lakes". It is 200,000 hectares larger than Hunan Province, which is called "a land of fish and grain". Inner Mongolia has promising future in freshwater aquiculture.
