Beijing officially sets the goal of becoming a world city

At the 13th Beijing Municipal People's Congress held on January 26, Guo Jinlong, Mayor of Beijing, said in the report on the work of Beijing Municipal Government that Beijing is positioned to become a global city. When deliberating on the report, Liu Qi, secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee said that at present, Beijing has organized experts to discuss the objective of building Beijing into a global city.

"Building Beijing into a global city" becomes a highlight of the report

On the afternoon of January 26, Guo, on behalf of the Beijing Municipal Government, addressed the report on government work to the conference, which proposes "building Beijing into a global city." The proposal became a new highlight in the report on government work in 2010.

Beijing Academy of Social Sciences has organized experts to conduct research

Actually, the objective to build Beijing into a global city was first proposed at the 7th Plenary Session of the 10th CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, during which, Liu appealed in his report on government work to accelerate the strategy of human-oriented Beijing, science and technology-oriented Beijing, and green Beijing with the focus on building Beijing into a global city to promote the development of the capital's economy better and faster.

During the panel discussion of a delegation from Dongcheng District, Beijing held on the afternoon of January 26, Liu said that after the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Beijing now is troubled with the problem of what to do next. After the objective to build Beijing into a global city was proposed, many people asked what a global city is. The objective still needs researching and perfecting to form a complete system. The Beijing Academy of Social Sciences has organized experts to conduct the research.

Liu said that the global city, in his point of view, should have Chinese characteristics. Different from Tokyo and New York, Beijing is the capital of China, and therefore should have its own characteristics. We should learn from foreign countries, but we cannot copy them. The objective was proposed in this year's report, marking the beginning. Detailed annual objectives, however, were not available. The public will conduct research in the future so that they can offer some suggestions in 2011 or beyond.
