At the house of Sun Jianying, a Beijing taxi driver, there are eight special diaries. These diaries were written by hundreds of passengers that took his taxi.
Guestbook becomes a diary.
Sun Jianying is warm-hearted. Having been a taxi driver for 14 years, he began to offer free service to people in need, such as senior citizens, disabled people since the year of 2000. He says he has never thought about how much gasoline he himself has purchased and how many people he has carried without charge, but if he cared about these minor details, he would probably stop doing these things.
Since 2007, he has kept a notebook in his car for passengers to record their opinions. "I did it because I wanted to collect comments from the passengers. At some point though, I don't know when, it became a book for people to write down their random thoughts and feelings."
Hundreds of passengers have written down their stories
From 2007 to the present, passengers from all over China have written enough to fill eight books. The content, sometimes just several lines or other times spanning many pages, reflects the various moods of the passengers. Sun preserves the diaries carefully and reads them in his spare time.
Reporters learned that among the diaries are the hopes held by youngsters who have come to seek their fortune in Beijing, the hard lives of busy white-collar workers and even some suggestions to the taxi industry written by a member of congress. The passengers were able to vent their feelings in the taxi this way, no matter what they felt before getting in the car. After saying goodbye to the passengers, Sun always could not help reading their notes. "If they wrote some suggestions, I can reflect on my service. If they write down their feelings and thoughts, I can just try to understand them."
Setting up a Charity Team
Recently, Sun has set up a charity team for the Xinghe Taxi Company. 32 taxi drivers, just like Sun, have made a commitment to offer free service to senior citizens over 65, disabled people and others facing different difficulties no less than twice monthly. As the initiator, Sun says that, "Over the years, I have come to feel more and more that taxi drivers represent more to the city than simply themselves. It is not always easy for people to leave home, and a little help along the way will make them feel blessed. Why not do it? "
