Hong Kong volunteer sacrificed his life during the earthquake and his "Hong Kong spirit" moved the entire city of Lanzhou
He was a truck driver; he travelled around China on foot to donate his bone marrow to the Chinese Marrow Donor Program (CMDP); he suffered from diabetes mellitus but struggled in Whenchuan disaster area for three months. His name is Wong Fu-wing, a volunteer from Hong Kong. People all called him "A Fu."

The strong earthquake, which happened in Yushu County, Qinghai Province on April 14, buried Wong, who at the time was doing volunteer work in the area, in the ruins. When the heavy news came out, it moved the entire nation. On April 15, the people of Lanzhou, who had been tightly bound to Wong, held a "Mourning Wong Fu-wing, a Hong Kong Volunteer" gathering beside the Yangtze River.
The activity began at 6pm and lasted until 9pm. There were more than 200 people mourning and praying in silence, the light from 300 candles, fragrant flowers and pieces of paper expressing their wishes, all of which expressed how they missed Wong as well as their grief for the other victims in the disaster area.
Xu Jie, the activity's organizer, said, "There are two themes for the gathering. One is to grieve over Wong and the other is to mourn the people in disaster area. We hope that everybody can devote their strength to the disaster area."
On two banners the words "Mourning Wong Fu-wing, a Hong Kong Volunteer" and "Unity is Strength, Combat the Earthquake and Help Yushu" were written. On the ground, The candles were placed into Wong's name "Fu" and following his name was a large heart-shaped picture lit by the candlelight, in which the candlelight revealed the numbers "4•14."
Yixiang, Wong's good friend, also participated in the gathering last night. He recalled that Wong had deep affection for Lanzhou and he had been to Lanzhou three times. He arrived at Lanzhou on April 1 this year and came to Xining on April 4 and then went to Yushu Benefaction & Good Wishes Orphanage on April 8. Unfortunately, he left us forever during the earthquake on April 14.
