Zhao Benshan, one of China’s most popular comic actors, and Song Dandan, a dramatic actress, are regulars at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala. Their sketches featuring the characters Bai Yun and Hei Tu have been among the highlights of the past three years’ galas. This sketch is the fourth in the series. The Torchbearer Selection Programme for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games is under way and Bai Yun and Hei Tu have been nominated as candidates from Liaoning Province. The final decision is about to be announced. Bai Yun is confident that she will be chosen, and starts ordering Hei Tu around. But when they arrive at the TV station where the announcement is to be made, it turns out that Hei Tu has more audience votes. The host gives them a last chance, and Bai Yun and Hei Tu are tested on their Olympic knowledge, their English, their interpretation of gestures and their personal statements. Hei Tu is still the winner, and Bai Yun finally admits defeat.
