Vitamin D may be an important way to arm the immune system against disorders like common colds, according to a report in this week's Archives of Internal Medicine in the US.

People with the lowest vitamin D levels reported having far more recent colds or flu. The risks were even higher for those with chronic respiratory disorders, like asthma and emphysema.

"Our findings support an important role for vitamin D in the prevention of common respiratory infections, such as colds and the flu," says lead author Professor Adit Ginde, from the University of Colorado Division of Emergency Medicine in Denver.
