According to UNESCO(www.unesco.org), the idea of creating an international movement for protecting historical sites in the world emerged after World War I, first by saving the Abu Simbel temples in Egypt.
On November 16 1972, the Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage was adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO.
In November 1985, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) in China agreed to join this convention. Till the end of 2001, China has 28 historical sites enlisted on the UNESCO's World Heritage List, 20 of them are cultural heritages.
Cultural heritage refers to monuments, groups of buildings and sites with historical, aesthetic, archacological,
scientific, ethnological or anthropological values.
