To mark 30 years of formalized Sino-Australian relations, the Melbourne Symphony has been invited to come to China in November. On November 10 the orchestra first visits Beijing to give two concerts at the Century Theater, and further performances are scheduled for Tianjin and Nanjing in mid-November.
Tracing its origins, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra was formally founded in 1940. It has a reputation for excellence, versatility and innovation, and has a particular interest in contemporary music. During their tour to Beijing, besides classic works by Beethoven, Mozart, Dvorak and Mahler, the program also includes a modern instrumental "Willow and Wattle" by a modern Chinese composer, Yu Jingjun.
Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Markus Stenz enjoys an enviable reputation both on the concert platform and in the opera house. In recent years, he has frequently appeared in Europe, especially in his native Germany, as well as the United States and Australia.
Solo Pianist Geoffrey Lancaster has been a driving force in Australia in the musical world for the past two decades. As a pianist, harpsichordist, organist and conductor, he is much in demand in concert halls and recording studios throughout the world.
