CPPCC annual session opens

The CPPCC is a patriotic united front organization. It serves as a key mechanism for multi-party cooperation and political consultation, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China.

Its main functions are to conduct political consultation and exercise democratic supervision. The conference also participates in the discussion and the handling of state affairs.

A highlight of the session is a report on the work of the Standing Committee, to be delivered by Committee Chairman Jia Qinglin. There's also a work report by Vice Chairman Li Meng on the proposals submitted by the members.

So far, 324 proposals have been received. They deal mainly with economic affairs, social security, education and medical care. The CPPCC members are expected to express their views on a number of hot issues in these areas: the slowdown in boosting farmers' income, food and drug safety, restructuring of state-owned banks, and the anti-corruption campaign.
