Chinese, French leaders reach consensus

French President Jacques Chirac says wide-ranging and in-depth talks with Chinese leaders have led to a consensus on various issues. On Saturday, the two sides signed a batch of cooperative documents, covering prevention and control of contagious diseases, information technology, telecommunications, environmental protection, railways, aviation, banking and movies.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, officials issued a joint press communique, vowing to join hands in promoting a world which is safer, more united and one which shows more respect to diversity.
The communique says China and France are willing to promote the stable development of China and Asia's relations with the European Union, as well as to eradicate all obstacles affecting such ties.
Both countries agreed to enhance high-level political dialogues, promote high-levels visits and especially to continue annual meetings between state leaders.
Beijing and Paris will institutionalize the coordination between their permanent delegations in the UN and other international organizations, cooperating in conflict prevention and peacekeeping.
