The tsunami that has devastated large parts of southern Asia has given 2005 a somber start, and the rising death toll dimmed New Year celebrations across the world.

President Hu Jintao says the Chinese government and Chinese people are willing to "provide any possible aid in its power" for the tsunami-affected countries. Hu made the pledge when speaking at a New Year tea party in Beijing on Saturday hosted by the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Hu added that China is willing to help and sincerely hopes its neighboring countries will soon recover from the disaster.

Chinese President Hu Jintao said, “On December 26, 2004 an earthquake off the coast of Indonesia caused a series of devastating tsunamis. We express sympathy and solicitude for the people in the affected areas. The Chinese government and people are willing to provide any possible aid in its power for the tsunami-affected countries. We hope sincerely that the government and people from those friendly neighboring countries overcome these difficulties and rebuild their homes soon.”
