In western China, the restoration work on the famed Potala Palace in Lhasa as well as two other temples in the Tibet Autonomous Region has resumed after a suspension of four months due to cold weather.
Efforts to restore the Potala Palace, the winter palace of the Dalai Lama, and the summer palace called Norbulingka, resumed last week. Work also started again at the eleventh century Sagya Lamasery in southwestern Tibet. The site is known for its collection of Buddhist scriptures written in the Tibetan, Mongolian and Sanskrit languages. The restoration project began in June 2002. Some 330 million yuan or about 40 million US dollars were invested to protect the 1,300-year-old Potala Palace, as well as Norbulingka Palace and the Sagya Lamasery from erosion. 170 million yuan or 20 million US dollars of the total was earmarked toward the renovation of the Potala Palace alone. Major projects of the renovation are expected to be completed in 2006.
